Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist
Dr. Nina Burruss is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, trauma-related disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as those with co-existing psychiatric conditions. In addition to her passion for working with children and teenagers, Dr. Burruss has a particular interest in Women’s Mental Health. She utilizes the perspectives model, which facilitates a collaborative and holistic approach to caring for patients.
Dr. Burruss is a lifelong visual artist whose work is strongly influenced by Pahari miniature painting, which she studied extensively before medical school. In addition to seeing patients at The Chesapeake Center, Dr. Burruss is involved in research in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Hospital assessing the impact of arts-based interventions on mental health. Her current research pertains to Visual Thinking Strategies, an evidence based, pedagogical approach to looking at and discussing art.
Education and Training:
Dr. Burruss completed her undergraduate studies in studio art at Wake Forest University before earning her medical degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine. She went on to complete her general psychiatry training at the University of North Carolina followed by child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins, where she served as chief resident.
Dr. Burruss is a member of the Gold Humanism Society and Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. She has held positions on the North Carolina Psychiatry Association (NCPA) executive council as well as the Maryland Regional Council of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (MRCCAP).

Dr. Burruss is board-certified in Adult Psychiatry, board-eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and licensed to practice Maryland.
